Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight after a vehicle was stolen from a Campbellford home early Friday morning.
Police say officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle shortly before 5 a.m. on July 17. The vehicle was found a short time later, abandoned in the surrounding area, but several items had been stolen from inside.
The investigation is continuing with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services.
Police say the incident serves as a reminder that leaving vehicles unlocked or valuables in plain view can provide criminals with an easy opportunity to commit theft.
The OPP is encouraging motorists to take simple precautions, including locking vehicle doors and windows, never leaving a vehicle running unattended, removing wallets, purses, cash, electronics and other valuables from sight, and securing vehicle ownership, insurance documents and key fobs inside their homes.
Police also recommend parking in well-lit areas whenever possible.
Investigators note that thieves commonly target unattended vehicles looking for valuables such as cash, identification, bank cards, electronic devices and tools. Stolen identification and personal documents can also be used to commit additional crimes.
The Northumberland OPP says taking a few extra seconds to secure a vehicle can help prevent theft and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
