More Peterborough residents will have access to primary care this summer as several family physicians join local medical practices and clinics expand their services.
The City of Peterborough says the additions will increase access to ongoing, in-person healthcare for residents who do not currently have a local family physician.
Among the clinics accepting new patients is East City Medical Centre on Armour Road, where Dr. Abimbola Ekundayo has joined the practice. The clinic now offers family medicine and walk-in care seven days a week, with another physician expected to join in August.
Valleyview Medical is also accepting new patients at its Lansdowne Mall and Peterborough Pharmacy locations, where Dr. Henry Oghotuoma and Dr. Babajide Odusan have established practices. Dr. Rubayat Chowdhury, a Peterborough resident returning after completing a family medicine residency in the United States, is also joining the clinic this month.
At Northcrest Pharmacy and Medical Clinic, Dr. Emmanuel Onifade has joined the practice, while Springdale Medical Centre has added Dr. Offiong, although that physician’s practice is already full. The clinic continues to accept patients through Ontario’s Health Care Connect program.
Mayor Jeff Leal says expanding access to family physicians remains a priority.
“Every new family physician who chooses Peterborough strengthens our healthcare system and helps build a healthier community for everyone,” Leal said.
The City says many of the expanding clinics now offer evening, weekend and walk-in appointments to improve access to care.
Residents without a family doctor, or those who currently travel outside the region for primary care, are encouraged to contact participating clinics directly, as each practice manages its own patient registration process.
The City, Peterborough Ontario Health Team and local healthcare partners are also developing a centralized online resource, expected to launch this fall, that will help residents identify clinics and providers accepting new patients.
