The City of Peterborough is welcoming visitors back to the Peterborough Visitor Centre at the Lift Lock, with the year-round tourism hub officially opening to the public on June 26.
The city-operated visitor centre, located at 353 Hunter St. E., is set to serve as a base for visitors to explore local experiences along the waterway and beyond.
Situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site beside the Peterborough Lift Lock, the centre is accessible for visitors travelling by car, boat and active modes of transportation.
Service area manager in Recreation, Parks and Culture Cathy Mitchell spoke with PTBOToday about working with local Indigenous groups to re-open the centre.
As the centre has been closed since 2020, she says the team is still working to fully curate the visitor experience throughout the space.
Mitchell is optimistic that the Visitor Centre will draw tourists into the community, building on the already 30,000 land visitors that come to see the lift lock every season.
