Routine fire hydrant flow testing will take place in the southwest quadrant of the City of Peterborough until July 24, with work scheduled daily between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
City officials say the annual testing is part of ongoing maintenance of the municipal water system and is used to assess the performance of the water distribution network. The work supports safety measures and helps identify and prevent water loss within the system.
Testing will be conducted in areas west of Park Street to the city limits and south of Sherbrooke Street to the city limits.
During the testing period, residents in affected neighbourhoods may notice temporary discolouration in their tap water. The city says this can occur when sediment in the water distribution system is disturbed during flow testing operations.
Officials stress the water remains safe for consumption despite any temporary changes in appearance.
If discoloured water is observed, residents are advised to run the cold water tap closest to the water source for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the water runs clear.
The City of Peterborough notes that similar discolouration can occasionally occur during routine maintenance activities or watermain-related work and is typically short-lived.
Residents seeking additional information or assistance related to water services — including concerns about discoloured water or watermain breaks on public property — can contact Water Services at 705-748-9301, extension 1295, during regular business hours, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
