Lakelands Public Health has released its 2025 annual report which summarizes the first year of its operation following the merger of Peterborough Public Health and the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge Health Unit that came into effect on January 1st of last year.
Serving a huge area which encompasses Peterborough, Haliburton and Northumberland counties, the cities of Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes, and Alderville, Curve Lake and Hiawatha First Nations, Lakelands Public Health’s 2025 saw it bring together staff, programs, systems and services under one umbrella. According to Lakelands Public Health board chair, that was a challenge in many respects.
Black says it was the right time for the merger, both from an organizational standpoint and in terms of best serving residents’ public health needs.
Black says work will continue this year to ensure Lakelands Public Health continues its upward trajectory, a process buoyed by $20 million in funding from the province.
In the report, Lakelands Public Health references a number of program statistics, including closed to 150,000 vaccines distributed to health care professionals, the monitoring of 149 public beaches, and the management of 224 outbreaks.
