The Ontario government is investing $56.2 million into Sir Sanford Fleming College, supporting the sector by equipping post secondary students in Peterborough for rewarding, in-demand careers.
This investment is part of the government’s new funding model, which will bring an additional $6.4 billion to universities, colleges and Indigenous Institutes province wide, according to Peterborough-Kawarthas MPP Dave Smith.
Funding is said to help build long-term sustainability in the sector, preparing students for rewarding careers that meet labour market demands.
Fleming College Interim President Dr. Theresa Knott stresses the value of this funding for Fleming students.
Operating funding for the sector will increase by 30 per cent to $7 billion in fall 2026, with a focus on delivering programs that align with student and labour market demand. The model also includes specialized funding for small, rural, northern and French institutions, ensuring students in all corners of the province have access to a world class education.
The government is investing $1.7 billion to fund 70,000 in-demand seats across the province, expanding enrollment in health care, teaching, STEM and skilled trades programs.
Under this new funding model, base per student funding at colleges and universities will increase by 6 per cent for full time students and 30 per cent for college part time students.
Dr. Theresa Knott expressed her gratitude for this investment, saying that beyond its local benefits, this funding addresses a larger issue province wide.
