A major leadership transition is underway at United Way Peterborough & District, as longtime Chief Executive Officer Jim Russell prepares to retire and the organization names Jason Seguya as its next leader.
The announcement was made Thursday at a press conference at the organization’s downtown Peterborough office, marking the end of an era for Russell, who has led the United Way for nearly 15 years.
Under his leadership, the organization says it expanded its community reach, strengthened partnerships across the region and enhanced its capacity to respond to local social needs. His retirement marks what the Board of Directors described as the close of a significant chapter in the organization’s 85-year history.
“Serving this community through United Way Peterborough & District has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” Russell said. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together… United Way’s best days are still ahead.”
Board Chair Karen Wilson credited Russell with positioning the organization for long-term stability and impact.
“Jim’s dedication and leadership have positioned United Way Peterborough & District for continued success and a smooth transition as he enters his well-earned retirement,” Wilson said.
Following a selection process described as careful and deliberate, the Board has appointed Jason Seguya as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 6, 2026.
Seguya brings experience leading mission-driven organizations through periods of growth and change, including roles with The Fulcrum Publishing Society and Ontario Student Voices. His background includes organizational leadership, governance, communications, human resources and community engagement.
He said he is honoured to take on the role and build on the organization’s existing legacy.
“I am deeply honoured to be joining United Way Peterborough & District and to have the opportunity to build on the incredible legacy of leadership, service, and community impact,” Seguya said.
He added that his leadership approach is grounded in collaboration, transparency and a focus on equity and inclusion.
Board Chair Karen Wilson said the transition has been carefully planned to ensure continuity.
“This next chapter builds on a strong foundation and an 85-year legacy,” Wilson said. “The Board of Directors is confident that Jason’s leadership will support continued growth, deepen long-standing partnerships, and create new opportunities for innovation and collaboration.”
Seguya will work with staff, volunteers, donors and community partners as he steps into the role in early July, with a focus on strengthening local impact and continuing the organization’s community development work.
The organization thanked Russell for his years of service and formally welcomed Seguya as it prepares for the next chapter in its work across Peterborough and the surrounding district.
