The owner of a downtown Peterborough restaurant that was recently vandalized has been overwhelmed by the community support he has received.
The front window of La Mesita on George Street North was smashed early on June 7th, leaving owner Martin Carbajal Mendoza on the hook for close to $2,000 to replace it. He has insurance but won’t make a claim, citing a high deductible and a higher premium if he does.
Carbajal Mendoza says he has received several messages from people wanting to help, some of whom have dropped off money, but notes the best way for people to help is to visit and enjoy his food.
Despite the incident, Carbajal Mendoza says there are no plans to move from the downtown.
Carbajal Mendoza says the safety of his employees has been, and remains, front of mind.
While many posted concerns on social media over what was viewed as a delayed police response to the incident, Carbajal Mendoza says police did a great job once they were involved.
A 29-year-old Peterborough man has been charged with michief under $5,000 in connection with the incident.
