Drivers in Peterborough’s downtown waterfront area should prepare for road closures this weekend as the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary at Del Crary Park.
Festival organizers have received approval from the City of Peterborough to close Crescent Street and several surrounding roads on Saturday, June 13, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate participants, spectators and event activities.
The closures will affect portions of George, Perry, Lake, Lock, Romaine, Crescent, Winch and Haggart streets surrounding Del Crary Park and the marina area. Temporary no-parking restrictions will also be in effect on Lock Street between Romaine and Ware streets.
Organizers say the closures are necessary to ensure public safety during one of the city’s largest annual waterfront events.
The festival, which serves as a fundraiser for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation, will feature dragon boat racing throughout the day along with food vendors, a family activity zone, live entertainment, a silent auction and the popular Survivor Flower Ceremony.
Opening ceremonies and the traditional Awakening of the Dragon will begin at 8 a.m., followed by race heats starting at 8:30 a.m.
The Survivor Flower Ceremony, which honours those who have died from breast cancer, those currently undergoing treatment and survivors, is scheduled for 11 a.m.
To help ease transportation concerns, a complimentary shuttle bus service provided by Hamilton Bus Lines will operate between designated parking areas and the festival grounds from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free supervised bicycle parking will also be available through B!ke Peterborough.
Festival organizers are encouraging residents to attend the event, cheer on paddlers and help celebrate a milestone year for the community fundraiser.
The day will conclude with divisional finals, championship races, awards presentations and the closing of the festival grounds by early evening.
Additional event information, transportation details and schedules are available through the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival website.
