The Kawartha Fury lacrosse organization is mourning the death of one of its U22 players following a tragic car accident after the team’s first-ever Medicine Cup tournament.
In a statement shared by the team, the organization said Eric Hainer, who had competed for the Fury during the weekend event, died while travelling home after the competition.
The team said Hainer had a standout presence during the tournament, noting he scored both his first and last goals for the Fury during the Medicine Cup, which marked a milestone moment in the program’s history.
His team described him as a dedicated player who carried a strong connection to the game of lacrosse, including a respect for its roots and traditions. Hainer played using a wooden stick, something the organization said reflected his appreciation for the cultural significance of the sport.
The Fury said his impact on the inaugural tournament will remain part of the team’s history.
In its statement, the organization extended condolences to Hainer’s family, friends, teammates and coaches, saying the loss has deeply affected the entire Fury community.
“There are no words that can take away this loss,” the team said, adding it hopes those grieving will find comfort in shared memories and support from those around them.
The organization also encouraged players to lean on one another during the difficult time and to carry forward the spirit of the game Hainer loved.
