A long-standing childcare centre serving families in Peterborough’s north end is facing an urgent and costly relocation after being issued an eviction notice requiring it to vacate its current site within months.
Northview DaySchool, a licensed childcare centre operating in the community since 1985, provides care for 226 children and employs more than 40 staff members. Over four decades, the centre says it has supported countless families and built a strong community rooted in early childhood learning and care.
In a message shared by parents, the centre says it has now been given less than four months to move from its current location, where it has operated for more than 40 years.
While a new site has been secured, the move comes with significant financial challenges. Estimated costs could reach as high as $300,000, largely due to the relocation of large fixed structures such as playground equipment, swing sets, storage sheds, fences and gates, as well as upgrades required to bring the new building into compliance with childcare licensing standards.
Parents of children at the centre have launched a fundraising effort to help offset the unexpected costs, saying a smooth transition is critical to maintaining stability for children, families and staff.
They say minimizing disruption will help children continue to learn and develop in a familiar environment, while also allowing parents to maintain work schedules without the added pressure of seeking alternative childcare spaces.
The group also notes that avoiding disruption at Northview DaySchool could help prevent additional strain on already limited childcare availability in the region.
The fundraising appeal emphasizes that any contribution, regardless of size, will help move the project closer to its goal of ensuring a seamless relocation for the centre.
Further details about the eviction, including the reason for the notice and the timeline for the new location’s opening, were not immediately available.
