A long overdue new take on the life of Sir Sandford Fleming written by celebrated local author John Boyko will be launched this Sunday (June 7) at Hutchison House in Peterborough.
‘In Pursuit of Tomorrow: The Inventive Life of Sandford Fleming’ details the life and many achievements of the Scottish born inventor and cartographer who moved to Peterborough in 1847 and married.
This is Boyko’s ninth book, coming after his national bestseller ‘Blood and Daring: How Canada Fought The American Civil War’, and the Governor General Award-short-listed ‘Forged A Nation’.
Boyko says a visit to Hutchison House, where Fleming lived, and his perusal of artifacts related to his life, piqued his initial interest.
Boyko says while he was well aware of Fleming’s invention of universal standard time, there were other facets of his life that proved a revelation.
Boyko believes Fleming is an example of a Canadian who has flown under radar in terms of acknowledgement and recognition for his achievements.
Copies of ‘In Pursuit of Tomorrow’ will be available at Boyko’s book launch, 2 to 4 p.m., as well as eventually at independent booksellers such as Take Cover Books Chapters in Peterborough and Happenstance in Lakefield, and online via Amazon.
