The City of Peterborough has appointed longtime municipal finance professional Darren Hancock as its new Director of Financial Services.
Hancock steps into the leadership role with more than 25 years of accounting and municipal finance experience, including 19 years with the City of Peterborough in a series of senior financial positions.
During his tenure with the municipality, Hancock has served as chief accountant and deputy treasurer, helping oversee budgeting, financial reporting, forecasting and financial governance initiatives.
In his new position, Hancock will be responsible for corporate budgeting, financial analysis, accounting and reporting, treasury functions, taxation, utility billing and revenue services.
“Darren brings extensive municipal finance experience, strong leadership and a deep understanding of the organization to this role,” said Richard Freymond, commissioner of finance and corporate support services.
Freymond said Hancock’s experience in financial planning, reporting and governance will support the city’s efforts to strengthen long-term financial sustainability, modernize systems and improve transparency and service delivery.
Hancock holds a Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) from Brock University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.
A lifelong Peterborough resident, Hancock said he is honoured to take on the role and contribute to the city’s future growth.
“Having been born and raised in Peterborough and having attended high school at PCVS, I had the opportunity to observe the heartbeat of the City from just across the street,” Hancock said in a statement.
He added that he intends to foster a collaborative and forward-thinking approach focused on strong financial stewardship, innovation and accountability.
The appointment comes as the City of Peterborough continues work on a range of strategic priorities, including long-term financial planning, infrastructure investment and service delivery improvements.
City officials say Hancock’s leadership will play a key role in advancing those objectives while ensuring responsible management of municipal finances.
