Sports volunteer extraordinaire Peter Flemons was paid tribute Monday (May 25) at a packed celebration that honoured his life.
Some 200 people – many of them members of sports leagues for which Flemons volunteered over many years – gathered at the Lions’ Community Centre to say farewell to their friend who died in January at age 67.
Peterborough Senior Ladies Slopitch past president Kathryn Woodbeck was among those who spoke at the gathering, touching on a facet of his life that extended well beyond the ball diamond.
Former softball pitcher, manager and organizer Clair Leahy also took to the podium. He termed Flemons “a unique character” who could never be replaced.
Bruce Flemons said the huge turnout spoke to how much his brother was loved and will be missed.
A scorekeeper at Fleming Phoenix and Trent Excalibur varsity volleyball games for more than two decades, Flemons was also an active and beloved member of the Mapleridge Recreation Centre as well as an eager volunteer with a number of organizations, the Canadian Cancer Society being one.
