The annual fundraiser, organized by the YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, happened this year on May 22 at Confederation Square in downtown Peterborough.
Organizers say money raised helps provide emergency shelter, counselling, outreach support and recovery programming for women, children and gender-diverse people escaping violence.
Funds also support the organization’s Journey of Care programs, including Crossroads Shelter and the START Program, which help survivors rebuild their lives after violence.
Services include safety planning, trauma support, housing assistance and programs designed to help survivors regain independence.
PTBOToday.ca spoke with YWCA Executive Director Kim Dolan as she reflected on the vital role these services provide.
Dolan says demand for domestic violence services continues to grow, making fundraising efforts increasingly important for frontline organizations.
They say community donations help remove barriers for women and families trying to escape dangerous situations.
Dolan says the walk also aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence and encourage community involvement in prevention and support efforts.
As demand for domestic violence services continues to rise, Dolan encourages the community to remain vigilant in supporting women facing abuse and to consider donating to help ensure life-saving programs and safe spaces remain available for those in need.
