The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board says a trustee seat representing Clarington has been declared vacant immediately under provincial education legislation.
The board confirmed the seat formerly held by Clarington trustee Joshua Glover was vacated in accordance with Section 228(1)(b) of the Education Act and Ontario Regulation 463/97, which govern trustee attendance requirements and participation in board meetings.
Under the rules, a trustee’s seat is deemed vacant if they miss three consecutive regular board meetings without authorization by board resolution. The regulation also requires trustees to attend meetings in person unless formal approval for electronic participation has been granted.
Following a review of attendance records and legislative requirements, the board said the vacancy occurred “by operation of law.”
Because the vacancy took place after April 1 in a municipal election year, the Education Act stipulates the seat will remain unfilled until the next municipal election on October 26.
The Municipality of Clarington holds two trustee positions on the board, and officials say local Catholic schools and families will continue to be represented during the interim period.
The board says it remains committed to serving students, families, staff and the broader community.
