The Peterborough Regional Health Centre has once again been recognized with Accreditation with Exemplary Standing — the highest designation awarded by Accreditation Canada — marking the third consecutive time the hospital has achieved the distinction since 2017.
Accreditation Canada confirmed the decision following a site visit in April, during which surveyors evaluated the hospital against more than 2,700 standards related to quality, safety and efficiency.
The Exemplary Standing designation is reserved for organizations that “go beyond Accreditation Canada’s requirements and demonstrate excellence in quality improvement.”
Hospital officials say the result reflects sustained performance across all areas of care delivery.
“This is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of every leader, healthcare professional, employee, volunteer and experience partner at PRHC,” said Dr. Lynn Mikula, president and CEO of PRHC. “While we have continued to experience a number of systemic challenges, I’m incredibly proud of the work our people have done to set PRHC apart as a leader in transformation, adaptation and innovation among our hospital peers.”
Surveyors highlighted several strengths during their evaluation, including the hospital’s alignment with service excellence standards, its focus on people-centred care, and strong interdisciplinary collaboration across departments.
They also commended PRHC’s communication practices, including regular team huddles and structured patient handovers, as well as its investment in education, competency development and clinical leadership.
Dr. Mikula said the recognition reflects a commitment to ensuring patients receive high-quality care throughout their treatment journey.
“It is my absolute pleasure to congratulate and thank everyone at PRHC for their unwavering commitment to ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care and support at every step of their care journey,” she said. “This is a well-deserved achievement for everything you do.”
