Yet another sure sign of summer to come will arrive this Friday with the opening of most of the historic Trent-Severn Waterway.
Due to significant snowpack and increased precipitation in March and April, four locks on the system’s northern end will not open right away, but 41 locks will, including those in Peterborough city and county.
Parks Canada communications officer Karen Feeley says staged openings of the system aren’t rare, having occurred most recently in 2017, 2019 and last year when locks opened had to close until things were stable.
With the return of the Canada Strong Pass this summer, Feeley anticipates a busy season on the waterway.
Feeley notes the Trent-Severn Waterway and its locks remain a timeless attraction.
Feeley adds system-related events will return this summer, including the popular Lock and Paddle event July 18th at the Peterborough Lift Lock.
