A large crowd of ALTO high-speed rail protesters greet Canada’s transport minister during a stop in Peterborough Friday morning.
Before making his way into a Chamber of Commerce event at the former CN train station on George Street, Steven MacKinnon took the time to chat with some protestors, later saying he takes public concerns expressed over the planned 1,000-kilometre high-speed rail line between Toronto and Quebec City “extremely seriously.”
Minister MacKinnon added “Anyone who shows up to meet a federal minister should be able to express themselves directly.”
Asked if calls, from both the opposition and the public, for the project to be cancelled will see that happen, MacKinnion gave an emphatic ‘No.’
Afterwards, Peterborough MP Emma Harrison acknowledge there presently more questions than answers about the project and that has added to some people’s frustration.
