It has been less than a week since people have been able to officially submit their paperwork to run for mayor and already there are five candidates who have stepped forward.
Those running include: Michael Eamon, Jacob Méthot, Neil Morton, Keith Riel and Rebecca Schillemat. A name that hasn’t joined that list yet is Jeff Leal, the city’s current mayor.
With many wondering if the longtime politician will seek another term in office, Leal gave this response during a press conference on Monday.
For those looking for trends, Leal didn’t announce his intention to run for mayor until July in 2022.
The Peterborough-native sat on city council from 1985 to 2003 representing Otonabee Ward, before spending more than 10 years as an MPP in Queen’s Park. He was elected mayor in 2022 while receiving nearly 13,000 votes or 49.33 per cent.
