The Ontario Provincial Police has released details outlining how the public can take part in honouring fallen officer Sergeant Brandon Malcolm ahead of his funeral service in Cobourg.
The funeral will take place this morning at 10:30 am at the Cobourg Community Centre. Attendance will be limited to family, invited guests, members of the OPP, emergency services, and officials. The service itself will not be open to the general public, but it will be available through a livestream.
A designated public viewing area will be in place as the funeral cortege arrives at the venue, and the procession will also be streamed online via the Ontario Provincial Police YouTube channel.
Funeral cortege route and public viewing
The cortege is expected to depart from a funeral home in Oshawa at approximately 8:30 am, travelling east along Highway 401 before exiting at Division Street in Cobourg, with arrival at the Cobourg Community Centre anticipated around 9:30 am.
Members of the public wishing to pay respects are being asked to gather safely at designated overpasses along Highway 401 between Stevenson Road South in Oshawa and Division Street in Cobourg. Officials are stressing that vehicles must not stop on the highway or obstruct traffic.
Beginning around 9:00 am, members of the OPP and other services will also march north on D’Arcy Street from Kerr Street to the community centre, where they will line the route as the cortege passes.
Public viewing on D’Arcy Street will be pedestrian-only, with spectators directed to the west side sidewalk. No vehicles will be permitted in the viewing area.
Road closures and traffic impacts
Road closures will be in effect starting at 6:00 am on May 6 and will remain in place throughout the service. Closed routes include:
- West Street between 7th Street and Kerr Street
- D’Arcy Street between Alexandria Drive and Kerr Street
- Kerr Street between Division Road and D’Arcy Street
- Ewart Street/3rd Street between Division Street and East Street
Traffic control will be in place, and updates will be shared through the Cobourg Police Service social media channels.
Livestream and community gathering
The funeral service and cortege procession will be livestreamed publicly on the OPP YouTube channel. The Town of Cobourg is also hosting a public viewing of the service at the Victoria Hall Concert Hall.
Condolences and tributes
Members of the public can leave messages of condolence through the Sergeant Malcolm memorial page on opp.ca. A book of condolences is also available at the Northumberland OPP Detachment in Brighton, and a tribute has been set up outside the Cobourg detachment.
The OPP is thanking the public for their support and cooperation as communities prepare to pay their respects.
