Paddles will hit the water once again next month as one of Peterborough’s most recognizable fundraisers approaches a major milestone.
Registration is already underway for the 25th annual Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival, set for June 13 at Del Crary Park on Little Lake, with a fundraising goal of $325,018 in support of cancer care at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
That number isn’t random. Organizers increased last year’s goal by 25 per cent to mark the anniversary, while also building meaning into every digit. The “2” and “5” reflect that two in five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The “18” highlights that one in eight women will face breast cancer, and the “.01” acknowledges the small percentage of men who will also develop the disease.
Festival chair Michelle Thornton says the event continues to make a major impact locally, with nearly $4.9 million raised since it’s inception.
Thornton says the festival is on track to surpass the $5 million mark this year, with more than $48,000 already raised ahead of race day.
While the cause remains at the forefront, she says creating an enjoyable experience has always been key to the event’s success.
Hosted by the Survivors Abreast Peterborough Dragon Boat Team, the festival features a full day of racing along with food and artisan vendors, a family fun zone, and the Thirsty Dragon beer garden.
Participants and spectators can also take part in the breast cancer flower ceremony, one of the day’s most meaningful traditions.
Organizers are encouraging teams to register, while the community is invited to come out, support the cause, and be part of a milestone year for an event that continues to bring people together on and off the water.
