Residents will have a chance to get a hands-on look at the equipment and services that keep the city running during a Public Works Week event at Nicholls Oval.
The celebration takes place Wednesday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Nicholls Oval Park, 725 Armour Rd., as part of National Public Works Week running May 17 to 23.
The free event will feature a Touch a Truck display, giving residents a close-up look at City of Peterborough Public Works vehicles and equipment. City arborists will also hold live demonstrations, including safe tree climbing practices, along with a guided tree walk focused on identifying local species and learning about the urban canopy.
A total of 300 two-gallon trees will be available for City residents through an advance registration system at peterborough.ca/trees. Trees will be distributed on a first-come basis with proof of residency required, and a limit of one tree per address.
Municipal Operations Co-Chairs Don Vassiliadis and Keith Riel said Public Works staff play a key role in daily city operations, from roads and sidewalks to forestry and waste collection. They said the event is meant to highlight both the visible work and the behind-the-scenes services that residents rely on every day.
Peterborough County-City Paramedics will also take part in the event as part of Paramedic Services Week, offering ambulance and mobile treatment van tours. Facility dog Charlie is also scheduled to attend for a meet-and-greet.
