The province is investing more than $1.7 million in public transit for Peterborough through its 2025–26 Gas Tax program.
Officials say the $1,773,769 will support transit services in both the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County, with the city receiving $1,732,762 and the county receiving $41,007.
Officials say the funding can be used to expand service hours, increase routes, purchase new vehicles and improve accessibility.
Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith said, “Today’s announcement reflects our government’s unwavering commitment to provincial transit infrastructure. By providing these essential Gas Tax funds, we are empowering the City and County of Peterborough to enhance their transit networks, drive ridership, and support the long-term growth of our region. This investment ensures that as our community expands, our residents have the reliable, accessible, and efficient transportation they need to connect with jobs, local services, and one another.”
The funding is part of nearly $380 million being distributed to 107 municipalities across Ontario.
Minister of Transportation Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria said, “Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is investing nearly $70 billion in public transit to protect Ontario by building a stronger, more resilient, self-reliant economy. Today, we’re ensuring municipalities can continue to deliver safe and reliable transit services for their communities.”
In addition to the Gas Tax program, the province also supports municipal transportation through the Connecting Links and Ontario Transit Investment Fund programs.
