The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorists that any aftermarket vehicle modifications must comply with Ontario law before being used on public roads.
Police say while custom parts are widely available, vehicle owners are responsible for ensuring modifications meet the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act and related regulations, regardless of where the parts are purchased.
OPP officers in East Region continue to encounter vehicles with non-compliant modifications that may affect safety, visibility, or legal operation.
Common issues include:
- Modified or excessively loud exhaust systems
- Illegal licence plate covers or obstructed plates
- Unsafe suspension changes, including certain lift or lowering kits
- Tires extending beyond fenders or missing mudflaps
- Window tint or lighting that reduces visibility or does not meet standards
Depending on the violation, enforcement can include fines, licence plate seizure, towing, or mandatory safety inspections.
Police note enforcement is focused on non-compliant cosmetic or performance modifications that create safety concerns, not accessibility equipment such as wheelchair ramps or adaptive driving devices.
More information is available through the Highway Traffic Act or the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website.
