A community tool-sharing program is expanding in Kawartha Lakes as part of Earth Week celebrations.
The Kawartha Tool Library has opened a second location inside the Lindsay ReStore on Angeline Street North, giving residents access to hundreds of tools without having to buy them.
The program works like a traditional library, but instead of books, members can borrow tools for home improvement, gardening and repair projects.
It was first launched in 2006 by volunteers at the Endeavour Centre and later taken over by Habitat for Humanity Peterborough and Kawartha Region in 2022.
Organizers say the expansion reflects a growing interest in sharing resources and reducing waste.
The new Lindsay site was made possible through a grant from the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, allowing the program to expand beyond its Peterborough base.
Members can access both locations, although borrowed tools must be returned to the same site.
The tool library also accepts donations, ranging from power tools to event equipment, and relies on volunteers to keep operations running.
A grand opening celebration is planned for Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring tours, refreshments and a ribbon cutting.
Discounted memberships will also be available for one day, with individual plans starting at 50 dollars per year.
Both the Lindsay and Peterborough ReStores will also offer 25 per cent off storewide during the event.
Habitat for Humanity Peterborough and Kawartha Region says the tool library complements its broader mission of supporting affordable housing and strengthening communities.
