As Democrats south of the border celebrate the result of Tuesday’s midterm elections which saw the party regain control of both the House and Senate, a Trent history professor says the outcome was predictable.
Acknowledging “it could have gone differently” in some states, such as Michigan, Dr. David Sheinin acknowledges what he terms a “stunning turnaround.” That said, he notes what transpired was to be expected in light of wide dissatisfaction with most all of President Trump’s policies and practices.
Dr. Sheinin says while President Trump can, and most likely will, exercise veto power to push his agenda through, elected Democrats can and should “perform.”
As for what effect, if any, the Democrats’ House and Senate control will have on the ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States, Dr. Sheinin suspects President Trump may be more motivated to strike a new trade deal.
