Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers that stopping for school crossing guards isn’t optional, even when making a right or left turn at an intersection.
With students travelling to and from school each day, police are urging motorists to pay close attention around school zones and understand their responsibilities under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.
According to the OPP, school crossing guards are authorized to stop traffic while helping pedestrians cross roadways where the posted speed limit is 60 km/h or less.
When a crossing guard displays a school crossing stop sign, drivers approaching from either direction must stop before reaching the crossing.
That includes motorists who are planning to turn right or left at an intersection.
Police say drivers must remain stopped until everyone, including the crossing guard, has completely cleared the roadway and it is safe to proceed.
The reminder comes as police continue emphasizing the importance of protecting children and other pedestrians during busy school arrival and dismissal periods.
The OPP are encouraging motorists to take several precautions when approaching school crossings:
-
Stop whenever a crossing guard displays a stop sign, regardless of whether you’re travelling straight or turning.
-
Reduce your speed and remain alert in school zones.
-
Watch for children and pedestrians who may enter the roadway unexpectedly.
-
Avoid distractions and keep your attention on the road.
-
Wait until the crossing guard and all pedestrians have cleared the roadway before proceeding.
Police warn that failing to stop for a crossing guard can put children, pedestrians and crossing guards at risk and may result in enforcement action.
Officers say school crossing guards play an important role in keeping students safe, particularly during the morning commute and afternoon dismissal.
The OPP are reminding drivers that road safety is a shared responsibility and that following the rules at school crossings can help prevent serious collisions.
