A 19-year-old driver is facing stunt driving and speeding charges after police say a vehicle was caught travelling at twice the posted speed limit on Water Street in Peterborough.
According to the Peterborough Police Service, an officer with the Traffic Unit was conducting general patrol near Water Street and Nassau Mills Road at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23.
During the patrol, the officer recorded a vehicle travelling at 120 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.
Police say the officer conducted a traffic stop and charged the 19-year-old driver under the Highway Traffic Act.
The driver faces charges of speeding and stunt driving.
As a result, the motorist was issued an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension, while the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The driver is also scheduled to appear in court on December 14, 2026.
Under Ontario’s stunt driving legislation, motorists caught travelling 50 km/h or more above the posted speed limit on roads with speed limits of 80 km/h or higher, or 40 km/h or more above the limit on roads posted below 80 km/h, can face stunt driving charges.
In this case, police allege the driver was travelling 60 km/h over the posted limit.
The incident happened during the Friday morning commute along one of Peterborough’s major north-south routes.
Police have not released the driver’s identity or provided additional details about the traffic stop.
