Peterborough students will get a behind-the-scenes look at how their city operates as part of Local Government Week.
The annual initiative highlights the role municipalities play in delivering essential services while recognizing the employees who help keep communities running.
In Peterborough, the City is working with local school boards to organize tours and site visits, giving students an opportunity to explore municipal operations and learn about careers in local government.
The activities will introduce students to a variety of City services, facilities and responsibilities, from maintaining municipal equipment to operating community facilities.
Mayor Jeff Leal says the initiative provides an opportunity for young people to better understand the work that happens behind the scenes.
“One of the best ways to understand local government is to see the work happening firsthand,” said Leal. “Whether students are learning about the equipment that keeps our City operating, exploring aviation, discovering local history or seeing what goes into running a major community facility, these experiences show just how many different skills and careers contribute to serving our community.”
Local Government Week is recognized annually across Ontario in collaboration with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario.
The initiative is intended to increase public understanding of municipal government, promote awareness of local services and highlight the range of employment opportunities available in the sector.
For participating Peterborough students, the tours will provide a closer look at the people, equipment and facilities involved in delivering services residents use every day.
The City says the week is also an opportunity to recognize municipal employees and the work they do to support the community.
