Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement regarding the tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, October 17, 2026:
“On behalf of the City of Peterborough, I offer our deepest condolences following the devastating tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta where four Canadian Armed Forces members lost their lives and many others were injured during a fire in a training area.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, friends, and colleagues of all who lost their lives and of those who were injured in this shocking incident.
This tragedy will be felt deeply by families and communities across Canada, including here in Peterborough. Our country’s Canadian Armed Forces members serve with courage and dedication. We honour the service of those who lost their lives, express our sincere gratitude for those who have sacrificed through service on behalf of our country, and we join Canadians across the country in mourning.
We also recognize the military and civilian first responders, health care professionals and everyone else providing care and support to those affected by this tragedy.”
