Eligible Peterborough residents could receive up to $450 to help cover snow removal costs this winter, with applications for a new city pilot program opening Thursday.
The City of Peterborough’s Snow Removal Subsidy program is designed to provide financial assistance to low-income seniors and residents with physical disabilities who are unable to clear snow from their properties.
Applications open Thursday, October 15, at 8:30 a.m., and close Wednesday, October 21, at 4:30 p.m.
The program offers up to $450 per eligible household for the 2026-27 winter season, distributed in two installments of up to $225.
However, space is limited.
Only 100 participants will be accepted into the pilot program. If more than 100 eligible applications are received, participants will be chosen through a random selection process.
To qualify, applicants must be Peterborough residents who own and live in their homes during the winter.
They must also be at least 65 years old or have a physical disability, be unable to clear snow themselves and have no other adult in the household physically capable of doing so.
Applicants must have an after-tax household income below the applicable Statistics Canada Low-income Measure threshold, adjusted for family size.
Residents living in condominiums where snow removal is handled by the condominium corporation are not eligible.
Those accepted into the program will be responsible for arranging their own snow removal services.
This can include hiring a snow clearing company or paying a neighbour who provides the service and issues receipts.
Applications can be submitted online at peterborough.ca/SnowRemoval, by calling 705-742-7777 or in person at City Hall, 500 George St. N.
