A Havelock ethanol producer is moving ahead with new wastewater treatment technology following a successful pilot project that removed more than 98 per cent of targeted contaminants under tested conditions.
Miranda Water Technologies has announced the completion of an industrial wastewater treatment pilot at Kawartha Ethanol’s facility, marking the company’s first deployment of its Miracell technology in the North American specialized industrial wastewater market.
The pilot used Miranda’s MC200 Miracell Rotating Biological Contactor system as part of Kawartha Ethanol’s broader effort to recover resources from its waste streams.
Following the results, Kawartha Ethanol has agreed to purchase the system, along with additional filtration and treatment technologies designed to improve the facility’s wastewater treatment process.
Miranda says the final installation will also include its SmartCell intelligent control platform, which will monitor treatment performance, collect operational data and help adjust the process as production conditions change.
The project involved collaboration between Miranda’s North American team and its environmental, process and manufacturing engineers in Türkiye.
Miranda President and CEO Michael Skinner says the results demonstrate the potential for the company’s technology to handle challenging industrial wastewater.
“This was a highly collaborative process that brought together Kawartha Ethanol’s industry knowledge with the environmental, process and manufacturing expertise of Miranda’s Canadian and Turkish teams,” said Skinner.
Kawartha Ethanol President Darrell Drain also welcomed the results.
“It has been a great experience for our team to leverage Miranda’s environmental engineering capabilities and manufacturing design expertise to develop a highly efficient treatment process,” said Drain.
Miranda says it plans to use the data and operating experience from the Havelock project to further develop wastewater treatment and resource recovery technologies for industrial applications across North America.
The companies have not announced a timeline for the final installation.
