A location app helped Peterborough County OPP quickly find two people who became lost while riding ATVs in North Kawartha over the weekend.
Police were called shortly before 12:30 p.m. Saturday, October 3, after a couple reported they were lost on a large rural property off Highway 28.
OPP say the pair had been riding all-terrain vehicles when they left the main trail and became disoriented.
Officers asked an OPP dispatcher to help the couple use the What3Words app to determine their location.
After receiving the three-word location, responding officers entered it into the app on their phones and located the couple in less than 20 minutes.
Police led them back to the main trail, where they were able to safely return to their starting point.
What3Words divides the world into three-metre squares, assigning each one a unique combination of three words that can be converted into geographic coordinates.
OPP are reminding anyone heading into wooded areas to be prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear, water, a flashlight and a fully charged cellphone.
Police also recommend downloading What3Words before heading out and caution people unfamiliar with trails against venturing onto them as darkness approaches.
