The County of Peterborough marked the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a flag raising ceremony at the Peterborough County Courthouse on Wednesday.
Hiawatha First Nation Chief Laurie Carr reflected on the respect demonstrated through an event like this.
Chief Carr says reconciliation is an ongoing process, not something that happens in just one day.
“National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to pause, listen and reflect on the experiences of Indigenous peoples and the lasting impacts of residential schools. I would encourage everyone to attend the event at the Healthy Planet Arena to learn and listen to the Indigenous voices in our community,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that belongs to all of us. The City remains committed to doing that work by strengthening and developing relationships with the First Nations within the Williams Treaties; Alderville, Beausoleil, Chippewas of Georgina Island, Chippewas of Rama, Hiawatha, Curve Lake, Mississaugas of Scugog Island and the Urban Indigenous communities in our region, while creating meaningful opportunities for Indigenous voices to be heard and considered in municipal decisions.”
