Ovarian Cancer Canada’s Walk of Hope fundraiser returns to Peterborough’s Nicholls Oval Park this Sunday (September 27).
First held locally in 2009, last year’s walk saw some 50 people raise a very impressive $16,300 for research, improved patient care and increased awareness.
The walk offers participants their choice of a 2.5- or 5-kilometre route which they can walk, run or bike. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the opening ceremonies set for 11 a.m. Registration can be made at www.ovariancancerwalkofhope.ca
Among those again taking part is Paul Plant who, since 2019 when his wife Karen died from ovarian cancer, has walked the route while balancing a canoe above his head.
Local walk chair and ovarian cancer survivor Marilyn Robinson says Plant’s involvement has shown how greatly families are affected by a diagnosis.
Robinson says the walk is emotional for participants on a few levels.
Robinson adds while the dollars raised are vital, the walk serves to heighten awareness of a form of cancer that doesn’t receive a lot of attention.
