Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal is expressing support for Jewish communities in Belleville, Peterborough and across Canada following a shooting at the Sons of Jacob Congregation in Belleville.
In a statement issued on behalf of the City of Peterborough, Leal said he was deeply saddened and concerned by the shooting, which occurred as members of the congregation gathered to observe Yom Kippur.
“It is especially disturbing that this violence occurred at a synagogue as members of the Jewish community gathered to observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar,” Leal said.
The mayor emphasized that everyone should be able to gather and practise their faith safely.
“Antisemitism, hate and violence have no place in our communities,” he said.
Leal acknowledged that the incident in nearby Belleville would also affect Jewish residents in Peterborough. He encouraged people to show friendship, empathy and kindness to their Jewish friends, relatives and neighbours.
The mayor also expressed concern for a Belleville Police officer injured during the incident and offered support to the officer’s family and loved ones.
He thanked police and first responders for their actions during the incident.
“Peterborough stands with the Jewish community in Belleville and here at home,” Leal said.
Belleville Police previously reported that an officer and another individual were injured during an encounter near Bleecker and Victoria avenues on September 20. Both were taken to hospital, and Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit was notified.
Police have not released further details about the circumstances of that encounter. Leal’s statement identifies the incident as a shooting at the Sons of Jacob Congregation.
