Changes are coming to a section of Park Street North in Peterborough, including lower speed limits, new bike lanes and changes to on-street parking.
City council has endorsed improvements to Park Street North between Sherbrooke and Wolseley streets aimed at improving safety and mobility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
Between Wolseley and Charlotte streets, the plan calls for new bike lanes with painted buffers and a reduction in the posted speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour.
On-street parking will also be restricted along that section, while additional separation between pedestrians and moving vehicles is intended to improve comfort for people using the sidewalk.
Between Charlotte and Sherbrooke streets, on-street parking will remain. New pavement markings will be added to visually designate space, while the speed limit will be reduced to 30 kilometres per hour.
According to the city, the changes are designed to create dedicated space for cyclists while helping reduce vehicle speeds through narrower-looking travel lanes and lower posted limits.
The city says vehicle flow and traffic volumes along the central Peterborough corridor will be maintained.
