With 10 Peterborough ward seats up for grabs and 28 candidates campaigning to fill those seats, this October’s municipal election will see more city council hopefuls come away disappointed than elated.
With the nomination period now closed, the field for all five city ward races is set with seven current councillors seeking a return to city hall.
With current councillor Keith Riel seeking election as mayor, three new faces in the council chambers are guaranteed. However, three could be four new nameplates should Riel be defeated in his bid to be mayor.
In Otonabee Ward, incumbents Kevin Duguay and Lesley Parnell are being challenged by Lucas Graham, Joe Laton-Trickett and Chris Potter. Jessica Correa and Noella Koshul were registered to run early on but have since withdrawn.
With Councillor Don Vassiliadis not seeking re-election, Monaghan Ward has just one incumbent, Matt Crowley, in the mix. A first-time councillor will emerge there in the person of candidates Ashley Flynn, Rose Kitney, Jen Lacey, Aris Metaxakis or AJ Shearer.
In Town Ward, incumbents Alex Bierk and Joy Lachica are being challenged by Jenni Cathcart, Jessica Kulmorgen-Hille and Nigel Lister.
With current councillor Riel seeking election as mayor, there will be a new councillor in Ashburnham Ward where incumbent Gary Baldwin is running alongside Ashley Bonner, Andrew MacGregor and Jason Stabler.
And in Northcrest Ward, it’s a full slate with eight candidates in the mix. With incumbent Andrew Beamer seeking re-election, Debbie Halstead, Phil Jolicoeur, Paul Lawton, Charmaine Magumbe Gavin Muir, Jim Wasson and Dennis Nephin are each seeking to be become a first-time councillor.
