City of Kawartha Lakes OPP is continuing a targeted aggressive driving enforcement campaign following a concerning increase in fatal collisions across the region.
OPP analysis found that by June 8, the detachment area had already recorded 10 fatal motor vehicle collisions — surpassing the total number recorded during all of 2023, 2024, and 2025 combined.
Highway 7 has been identified as a major area of concern, accounting for 35 per cent of fatal roadway collisions between January 1, 2023, and June 8.
The review also found that many deadly collisions happened during daylight hours, in clear weather, and on dry roads — highlighting the impact driver behaviour can have on road safety.
In response, the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP launched a targeted aggressive driving enforcement initiative on June 30.
During the first month of the campaign, officers laid:
- 83 Highway Traffic Act charges
- 1 Criminal Code driving charge
- 53 speeding and stunt driving-related charges
Inspector Rob Flindall, Detachment Commander with the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, says every fatal collision represents a family forever changed.
“Every fatal collision leaves a family forever changed. Behind every statistic is a loved one who should have made it home,” Flindall said. “Our goal is to prevent tragedies and save lives.”
OPP say aggressive driving behaviours including speeding, unsafe passing, following too closely, and stunt driving continue to put everyone on the road at risk.
Drivers are being reminded to obey posted speed limits, leave enough space between vehicles, avoid distractions, plan ahead, and make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.
Targeted enforcement will continue throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes as police work to reduce preventable collisions, injuries, and deaths on local roads.
