New heritage discoveries, research collaborations and cultural exchanges continue to evolve from connections made last year during the bicentenary of the 1825 Peter Robinson emigration.
Graves Ireland will launch community-led research projects in both Ireland and across the Peterborough region. The subsequent documenting of local history, graveyards and community stories will create new opportunities for shared research, heritage tourism and community engagement between Ballyhoura in Ireland and Peterborough, strengthening connections between descendants of the original emigrants and their ancestral homeland.
Local historian Patrick Leahy and Irish archaeologist John Tierney will host Irish Names in Canadian Stone: A Transatlantic Heritage on August 20th in Ireland, an exploration of the enduring links between Ballyhoura and the communities established locally via the Peter Robinson settlement. Leahy says the interest expressed by many during last year’s commemoration has fueled continued research.
Tierney says the collaboration has brought forth revelations that are new even to him.
Leahy says this September’s work will build on last year’s initial partnership with Historic Graves Ireland that focused on Douro.
