Fleming College is welcoming students from across the region to its annual Skills Ontario Summer Camp next week, giving youth the chance to explore careers in the skilled trades through hands-on learning.
The camp, held in partnership with Skills Ontario, runs Aug. 10 to 14 at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough and is open to students entering Grades 7 to 9 from Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Durham and Hastings.
Hosted at the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre, participants will gain practical experience in fields including construction, plumbing, electrical, welding, arboriculture, fish and wildlife, blasting, heavy equipment and hairstyling.
Students will build projects they can take home while learning about design, safety and craftsmanship using industry-standard tools and equipment.
On Aug. 11, campers will visit Fleming’s Frost Campus in Lindsay to take part in outdoor activities focused on environmental and natural resources sciences.
The week will also feature a visit from the Skills Ontario Trades & Tech Truck on Aug. 13, offering interactive simulators and hands-on activities.
The camp wraps up Aug. 14 with a parent showcase at Sutherland Campus, where families can tour the facilities and see the projects completed throughout the week.
The program is part of Skills Ontario’s provincewide effort to introduce young people to careers in the skilled trades and help address Ontario’s growing demand for skilled workers.
