The United Way’s annual Backpacks for Success campaign is in full swing, with a school supplies collection event set for this Saturday (August 8).
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Auto Connect Sales on Lansdowne Street West, the aim is to fill the cargo holds of two vintage Ford pickup trucks with donated school supplies which, in turn, will go into backpacks destined for financially vulnerable students returning to class this September as well as new Canadians.
Since launching in 2003, Backpacks for Success has provided close to 13,000 backpacks to students of both local school boards. Last year’s campaign saw 457 backpacks stuffed and distributed.
United Way campaign officer Adeline Murphy lists the items being sought.
Murphy outlines what happens once enough school upplies are gathered.
Murphy confirms the United Way’s belief that no student should go without.
Parents and guardians of students in need can now request backpacks and supplies for the new school year directly through their school or related support agency.
