More than 25,000 used writing instruments were collected in June for recycling, diverting more than 200 kilograms from the local landfill.
The second annual collection, organized by Clean Up Peterborough in partnership with local school boards, saw discarded pens and markers directed to the Staples-sponsored TerraCycle Writing Instrument Recycling Program for recycling into new products.
A total of 15,361 writing instruments were collected from 38 Kawartha Pine Ridge public schools, which represents close to 60 percent of the total. The remainder came from two Catholic board schools, two independent schools, and businesses, municipalities, libraries, workplaces and community organizations in the city and county.
To date, Clean-Up Peterborough has diverted just more than 73,000 writing instruments from landfill.
