The Selwyn Fire Department has lifted the total burn ban that had been in place since July 16 because of hazardous air quality caused by wildfire smoke from northern Ontario.
With air quality and fire conditions improving, residents can once again conduct open-air burning, provided they comply with the Township’s Open-Air Burning By-law.
Deputy Fire Chief Howard Jinkerson reminded residents that fire safety remains a shared responsibility.
“While conditions have improved, residents are reminded that fire safety remains a shared responsibility,” Jinkerson said. “Please ensure you are burning in accordance with the Township’s Open-Air Burning By-law, have water or other extinguishing methods available, and never leave a fire unattended. Burning conditions can change quickly, and everyone plays an important role in preventing fires.”
The fire department is reminding residents to review the by-law before burning, supervise all fires, burn only permitted materials, follow setback requirements and ensure fires are fully extinguished when finished.
Officials also urge residents to check current burning conditions before lighting a fire by calling the Selwyn Fire Department or monitoring the Township’s social media channels.
The Township thanked residents for their cooperation during the burn ban and encouraged everyone to continue practising safe, responsible burning.
