The City of Peterborough is reminding residents that open-air burning is prohibited within city limits.
The ban applies to all outdoor fires, including bonfires, campfires and the burning of yard waste. City officials say the restrictions are in place to reduce fire risks and protect public safety, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Residents are permitted to use Technical Standards and Safety Authority-approved propane or natural gas appliances, such as fire bowls, fire pit tables and barbecues. However, wood-burning devices, including chimineas, are not permitted.
The City is also reminding residents that smoking and vaping are prohibited in parks, sports fields, playgrounds, splash pads, wading pools and beaches, except in designated smoking areas.
The restrictions are enforced under both the Smoke-Free Ontario Act and the City of Peterborough’s smoking bylaw.
Anyone caught smoking or vaping outside a designated area could face a fine of $305.
More information about smoking, vaping and public spaces is available through Lakelands Public Health.
