The City of Peterborough is encouraging residents to stay cool and hydrated as Environment Canada forecasts temperatures reaching 30 to 37 C, with humidex values as high as 45 C this week.
To help residents beat the heat, the City’s PTBO H2O mobile drinking water station has been set up at Quaker Foods City Square and will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday. The station provides eight drinking fountains, eight bottle refill stations and is stocked with 1,400 litres of municipal drinking water each day.
Residents can also cool off at several City facilities during regular business hours, including the Peterborough Public Library, Miskin Law Community Complex and Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre. Trinity Community Centre remains open daily, offering daytime drop-in services and overnight programming.
Outdoor water bottle refill stations are available at several parks and public facilities, while splash pads across the city are open daily. Beavermead Beach is supervised by lifeguards from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while Rogers Cove remains open but is unsupervised.
The City is also directing residents to its online Cooling Spaces Interactive Map and Lakelands Public Health for information on preventing heat-related illness and recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
