Curve Lake First Nation (CLFN) has opened the Shki Maajitaawin Gitigaanan (New Beginnings Farms) Aquaponics Facility, a project aimed at improving food security and supporting sustainable economic growth in the community.
All products in the 42,840 square foot facility are grown without the use of antibiotics or hormones, ensuring the production of food that is both healthy and aligned with environmental stewardship and community values.
CLFN says the company aims to produce 20,000 lbs. of fish monthly utilizing state of the art RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) technology. Approximately 100,000 lbs. of green produce and vine crops (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers) will be produced annually from the hydroponic side of the business.
Curve Lake Chief Laurie Hockaday spoke to how Shki Maajitaawin Gitigaanan will benefit the community in a number of areas for years to come.
The Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) contributed $2.95 million, while the Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative contributed $1.45 million and the Local Food Infrastructure Fund contributed $430,000 to this project.
As production continues, the aquaponics facility is expected to provide a reliable source of fresh food, local employment and economic opportunity for generations.
