A Peterborough man is facing charges after police say a teenage girl was approached from behind, struck with an object and robbed of her backpack Monday night.
Peterborough Police say officers were called to the area of Parkhill Road and Benson Avenue shortly after 11:15 p.m. on July 6. Police located a man matching the suspect description nearby, who allegedly fled on a bicycle after discarding an item in a wooded area.
Police say the suspect was taken into custody after being struck by a police cruiser during the attempt to stop him. The cruiser also struck a tree. The man was arrested at gunpoint and taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for examination before being returned to police custody.
The 15-year-old victim did not require medical attention, and police say some of the stolen items were recovered.
The 51-year-old accused has been charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He remains in custody and was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, July 7th.
