The City of Peterborough says its Canada Day fireworks display will be rescheduled later this summer after severe weather forced organizers to cancel the event on July 1.
City officials made the decision after a severe thunderstorm moved through the area and Environment Canada continued to forecast the possibility of additional storms during the evening.
“The difficult decision was made to cancel the fireworks display based on the conditions at the time,” said Brendan Wedley, Director of Strategic Communications and Service Peterborough. He added that the City recognizes the disappointment felt by residents and is working with its fireworks provider to determine a new date.
Despite the cancellation of the fireworks, Canada Day celebrations attracted strong community participation throughout the day.
The festivities included more than 20 parade entries, over 30 vendors, live entertainment, and a variety of community groups and performers at Del Crary Park.
City officials thanked residents for their patience and understanding and said details on the rescheduled fireworks event will be announced once plans are finalized.
